Hiba School Activities: May

31 May 2023

“The things that excite you are not random. They are connected to your purpose. Follow them.”

——Terrie Davoll Hudson, Award-winning business leader and author

An article in BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education shows that pupils who participate in extracurricular activities have greater academic success, greater character development, especially in the areas of time-management and leadership skills, more positive social development, and greater interest in community involvement. Since its establishment, Hiba Academy Hangzhou has had a wide range of School Activities (SAs) that supplement and enhance life at the school. The academic, creative, performing arts and physical SAs at Hiba allow pupils to find their passions while realising their potential and broadening their horizons so they may go on to the global stage with an assertive posture. The SA programme has been widely appreciated by our pupils and their parents. Read on and discover how our Hiba pupils have embraced the opportunities to explore the unknown with courage in May.

Academic School Activities (SA)

Academic campus activities give pupils the opportunity to expand and even go beyond what they have learned in the classroom, guiding them to reach for the top and challenge themselves and experience diverse cultures from around the world through academic activities such as spelling bee and hard-tipped pen calligraphy.

Spelling Bee

We provided pupils with scrambled letters and challenged them to find words that could be formed. It is an activity for one to find order in chaos. Pupils showcased their language skills and spelling abilities in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Through this activity, they not only expanded their vocabulary but also developed their attention and problem-solving skills.

Hard-tipped Pen Calligraphy

Hard-tipped pen calligraphy is a jewel in the garden of calligraphy art. In this lesson, pupils will learn the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy using a hard brush pen. Through practising basic strokes and proper writing techniques, they will cultivate the aesthetic sense and skills of calligraphy. Pupils will experience the unique charm of writing Chinese characters with a hard brush pen and gradually master the fundamentals of calligraphy. It's an opportunity for pupils to appreciate Chinese traditional culture and art.

Creative School Activities (SA)

Creative SAs offers a platform for pupils to be creative and imaginative, allowing pupils to learn from traditions while being progressive. This type of physically engaged learning requires participation from both sides of the brain that contributes to strengthened memory and information retention.

3D Arts and Sculpture

It is a time to demonstrate your creativity, patience, and concentration. In this activity, pupils will explore the charm and creativity of pottery. They will have hands-on experience in kneading clay, learning basic pottery techniques and the craftsmanship process. Through shaping, carving, and glazing, pupils will create unique ceramic artworks, showcasing their artistic talents and imagination. It's a wonderful journey that nurtures pupils' aesthetic sense and manual dexterity.

Chinese Painting - Beginner

In the past sessions, pupils learned the basic knowledge and techniques of traditional Chinese painting. They studied renowned artists' works, gaining insights into different painting styles and expressive techniques. Pupils personally wielded the brush and practised the use of ink and brushstrokes, as well as incorporating traditional elements into their artwork. Through this activity, pupils explored the distinctiveness of Chinese painting, cultivating their aesthetic sense and artistic expression abilities.

Performing Arts Activities (SA)

Matthew Zawadzki, a health psychologist at the University of California, found in his study that engaging in a mentally stimulating hobby reduces stress and has been shown to have numerous health and psychological benefits, like improved focus and happiness. Our performing arts SAs works to inspire one’s mind and extend their interests.

WCH Senior Theatre Company

Under the guidance of the teacher, pupils will embark on a vibrant journey of theatrical rehearsals. Through performance and role-playing, they will explore the charm and artistic expression of theatre. Pupils develop their acting skills, stage presence, and teamwork, collaboratively creating a captivating theatre production that showcases their talent and passion.

Musical production

In this activity, pupils learn basic acting skills and collaborate with instruments to perform a music theatre production. Through stage rehearsals and music arrangement, pupils showcase the synergy between theatrical performance and musical accompaniment. They learn how to work together with instrumentalists to create a vibrant stage atmosphere in sync with the music. It's a captivating activity that fosters teamwork and collaboration.

Physical School Activities (SA)

Dr Michael Brickey, author of “Defy Aging,” believes that an ideal hobby would be one that creates a diversion from daily life, a passion for something of great interest, and a sense of purpose. Having physical exercises encourages a healthy lifestyle and develops key physical attributes guiding pupils to find meaning in life in the wider outdoor areas.

All About MTB (Mountain Bike)

What are the components of a bicycle? How to assemble a bicycle?  All About MTB SA allows pupils to learn about different parts of a bicycle and their functions, as well as understand how to correctly assemble a mountain bike. Through hands-on activities and guidance, pupils will experience the mechanical structure and operating principles of a bike. This activity not only develops pupils' manual skills but also ignites their passion for sports and adventure.

U10-U12 Girls Basketball

In the 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup tournament, the Chinese women's basketball team won the runners-up trophy with courage and perseverance. Upholding the spirit of the Asian Games of Ever Onward, Hiba also offers an opportunity for girls to learn and develop basketball skills. Under the guidance of a professional coach, pupils will learn fundamental basketball skills such as passing, dribbling, and shooting. Through team training and friendly matches, pupils will enhance their basketball abilities, foster teamwork, and enjoy the fun and confidence that basketball brings.

We will continue to update our SA highlights and share them with you in the future.
