Our sports mascot – Wellington Lion has made its debut on our sports days! The inspiration for the Wellington Lion comes from the lion sign on the badge of Wellington College UK. It symbolises Courage and Strength.
"Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life." — Billie Jean King
In September 2023, the Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou and it will inspire all to participate in sports. For centuries, the importance of sports has been widely recognised. In the pursuit of becoming higher, faster and stronger, sport has always looked to technology to enhance the experience, and today, artificial intelligence (AI) is taking it to a whole new level. However, the human factor is what brings excitement and surprise to the world of sport – and that is something AI can never compete with. Wellington College Hangzhou is committed to academic excellence and the all-round development of our pupils. Through our professional physical education, we guide them to build an active and healthy lifestyle and flourish. In line with the spirit of the Asian Games, our annual sports day also aims at increasing participation and building a better future. More importantly, sports day is a happy event conducive to one’s well-being. According to the Journal of Happiness Studies, there is evidence showing a consistent positive relationship between physical activity and happiness. From Primary School to Sixth Form, our pupils thoroughly enjoyed our sports day.

G1-3 Sports day was a day of fun and excitement. Mr. Zhai who had organised the event focused his attention on participation and the ability to involve both parents and pupils within sporting events. The day consisted of a series of athletic events and fun team based events. Both pupils and parents thoroughly enjoyed the day, and the true demonstration of community was displayed. Pupils were recognised for showing Hiba values.
Yuki, Grade 1
"I think sports day is lovely. My favourite activity is “throwing the arrow”. We need to throw the arrow as far as possible."
G4-6 Sports day focused on three strands: track, field, and fun. Pupils had the opportunity to take part in all events during the day. Our blue-ribbon event saw our top sporting athletes participate in the 400 meters, 4 x 100 meters and the 100 meters. This was an incredible moment where both parents, pupils and teachers united in cheering on both individuals and house teams. Although there were elements of competition during the Grade 4-6 sports day, the focus was on pupils promoting school values throughout. All pupils showed the value of courage by competing in events even when they were deemed as challenging.
Charles, Grade 6
"I like sports a lot, especially long jump and high jump. I feel excited and happy at the sports day."
Joydi, Grade 5
"I like the sports day because there was a 200-meter running race. It is the first time that I see so many people participating in the event. I feel a little nervous but also very surprised. I like the mascot so much - he said hello to us and made funny poses. It was so lovely."
This year we decided to increase the element of competitiveness for our eldest pupils. This was created by combining both Hiba Junior High, Wellington Senior and Sixth Form pupils in to one amazing sports day. The athletics championship took place, which resembled an actual athletic meet. The pupils within these grades showed determination to succeed and to achieve their personal bests. Responsibility was the key value that we wanted to promote to encourage those pupils within the U14/ U16 championship events to be more responsible on their own. A series of fun events also took place alongside the championships including team games and ultimate frisbee.
Andy, Sixth Form
"I participated in the 800m run and the 4x100m relay run. I liked the 800-meter run especially because it strengthened my endurance and perseverance."
Community is an extremely important aspect of our school, and this was evident from the amazing support shown by our parents, cheering on our fantastic pupils. Friends of Wellington and Hiba also supported the event by providing both food and beverages to those parents that came to spectate.
Parent of Tiger, Grade 1
"I am very happy to come to the school sports day. It is such an exciting day. Parents were cheering their children on and the children are all having a great time participating in the event. If there are two words to describe the field day, then my words are: excited and enthusiastic. It is an opportunity for children to show their core values of Courage."
Parent of Rock, Grade 7
"I felt the charm of competitive sports from this year's sports day. Children at Hiba and Wellington were so happy, whether they are participating in it or not, they are reaping the joy and happiness with a positive attitude."
In sports day, pupils challenged themselves and reaped victory, but also enjoyed the competition, friendship and growth. Here at Wellington College Hangzhou, our annual sports day will continue to pursue the Wellington vision of sporting excellence and we plan for improved success each year. Indeed, we hope to continue spreading the message of Wellington College Hangzhou sport by competing both in-house and within the best federations in Asia. Furthermore, the whole College campus is looking forward to supporting the much anticipated Hangzhou Asian Games coming to our beautiful city in September.
