Message from the Principal
This week, all school divisions have had curriculum evening sessions, another opportunity to meet parents offline after the orientation day at the start of the school year. I am grateful for the active participation from parents and hope that such events have given you more information about the school curriculum and teaching. I was also honoured to participate in a few sessions where I reviewed the vision of Hiba School and shared with parents the outstanding achievements of our pupils in the last academic year. The school provides an immersive bilingual learning environment and has high academic expectations for Hiba pupils. However, we also want our pupils to be enthusiastic learners who follow their passions and are prepared for the challenges in the future, which can only be achieved when pupils are self-motivated to learn. In his book Self-Drive, the American author Ferrar Cape wrote about the impact one’s self-motivation has on their life. Only when we enjoy learning and working and see it as an opportunity to grow will our perseverance, resilience and integrity be inspired, supporting us to keep forging ahead.
How do we cultivate Hiba pupils’ self-drive to learn?
This week, Mr. Julian Jeffery - Chief Executive Master of Wellington China Education Group, visited Wellington Hangzhou Campus. Mr. Jeffery was previously the Master of Wellington College International Tianjin and has extensive experience in school management, teaching management and teacher development. During his visit to the school, he had an in-depth discussion with the school management team about the development plan and work plan for the new school year and had learning walks around the campus to learn more about classroom teaching and learning. He will provide more guidance and support to the school in the future.
We believe active communication with parents is essential to establish a good partnership of mutual understanding, trust and support for the school’s development. To enhance home-school interaction and activities at the school, we encourage more parents to participate in such activities as information sessions, coffee mornings, meet the principal, meet the tutor, one-to-one parent meetings, open days and parent representative meetings. Parents can also become parent volunteers to further engage with the school and other parents in the school community to strengthen the Hiba community.
Sincere greetings to Hiba Community.

On Thursday, we had a wonderful session with Molly Hammond, a Physics student at the University of Oxford. She spoke to over 100 pupils and parents about how she built up her university profile, prepared for the admissions test and interview and about her life as a student at one of the best universities in the world. Our pupils were fascinated with how Molly’s application stood out above her peers by independently feeding her thirst for knowledge through reading Physics related texts. It was a surprise to our audience to learn that competitions did not feature highly in her university profile.
I believe the impact of having guest speakers in our pupils’ positions recently is immeasurable. Pupils can easily relate to them and see how their actions could lead to a similar pathway. Molly did a fantastic job of raising aspirations and was an inspiration to all.

Educator Lilian Katz once said: “Curriculum should help children make deeper and fuller understanding of their own and the broader experience”.
At Hiba, we hope every pupil can have a free and well-rounded development, demonstrating the Hiba identities of “Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive”.
G3-G6 curriculum events were successfully held in Upper Primary this week. Our Head of Chinese, Head of Maths and Head of English introduced the curriculum settings, learning content, learning activities, parent-school cooperation and many other aspects of pupil development.
We always believe that curriculum is the centre of teaching activities, and it should always serve pupils’ well-rounded development. The Chinese curriculum is committed to awakening pupils’ Chinese cultural genes and strengthening their cultural confidence. The mathematics curriculum can stimulate pupils’ flexible and critical thinking abilities. The English curriculum pays close attention to the unique needs of each pupil, providing pupils with enough space for free and individual development.
“Cultivating talent through virtue, kindness and integrity” is always the top priority of Upper Primary. We are committed to supporting our pupils to develop in an all-round way and thrive in the fast-changing world by adhering to Hiba values and Hiba identity.

This week I would like to consider the Hiba value of kindness more deeply. As adults, we often discuss this as a skill we believe is essential for children to learn, but we are not always clear as to why – other than to learn to be ‘nice’.
Kindness can be defined as ‘the quality of being generous, friendly and considerate or, as one of the Lower Primary child told me this week in Assembly, ‘when you help people. Essentially it is also the ability to empathise with others and to be able to understand their predicaments, feelings and challenges. Having a group of people who can show kindness to each other benefits both individuals and the group. When a group contains people who can empathise, problems are more likely to be solved effectively and constructively, and they can communicate with more purpose. They can gain the cooperation of others for the attainment of goals. People who demonstrate kindness are also more likely to have it reciprocated to them, and therefore their sense of wellbeing is also enhanced.
Like all skills, some children have a better grasp of them than others, whether this is innate or because of their early experiences. However, for many and most to some extent, it is still a learning process that adults need to guide and teach. Younger children are naturally more egocentric and are not necessarily developmentally able to weigh up the consequences or the bigger picture of their actions. Sometimes they may also mistake kindness for constantly giving in to others. This is where adult role modelling and guidance are so important – a punishment may seem like a just reaction, but if this happens without learning, there is little point to it. Through talking to children, adults can expand their thinking – adults can encourage and develop children’s ability to reflect and assess their actions. For example, we might ask the child to put themselves in the place of another ‘How would you feel if that happened to you? How do you think the other person is feeling? We may explicitly tell children, ‘When you did that, it had a consequence for the other person.’ We might ask a child to consider why they did something and think of different ways to handle a problem in future.
On the other hand, we may also need to guide a child on to respond when someone is not being kind to them. Sometimes children can be afraid to calmly and firmly protect themselves in case they are not seen as being kind to others. We may need to support them in understanding the difference between being kind and allowing others to take advantage.
Childhood is the time for this. It is when a person’s personality develops. It is a learning time – not just learning that a ‘bad’ action may have a ‘bad’ consequence but learning how to assess the consequences of their actions before they make them and how to make amends if they make a misjudgement.
Developing these processes in children is something we aim to do for our pupils, for the good of both the individuals and the communities in which they operate.

Last academic year, some of our Lower Primary and Upper Primary children in Hiba participated in the SingUp Day project. During our music curriculum time, we learnt a commissioned song based on kindness. All the children enjoyed singing the song.
SingUp is an online organisation and resource from the UK that places singing at the heart of teaching. It is one of the best in the world. Every year, they do “SingUp Day”, on which all participating schools across the globe sing a song, specially commissioned, to celebrate music, unity, kindness, and many other values. These performances are recorded and sent to the SingUp team, selecting the best submissions and creating a digital choir.
We are fortunate to have been selected along with 94 other schools worldwide. Along with Wellington College International Hangzhou, we are proud to be the only schools representing China. Please note that 95 schools feature in the video as a digital choir; therefore, we are with other schools in the video shots.
Please see the following times if you would like to find the specific times when our children are shown on the digital choir.
