Message from the Principal
亲爱的家长：
Dear Parents,
上周末，惠灵顿杭州校区总校长Richardson女士和我一起赴上海开展了今年惠灵顿杭州校区第一场专场招聘会，为2023-2024学年招聘优秀师资。学生发展是学校工作的核心，而优秀的师资队伍是学校教育教学质量的保证。因此，学校将举办多场线上与线下招聘活动，通过不同主题介绍惠灵顿杭州校区，以期吸引最优秀的教师与教育管理人才加入惠立社群，与我们共筑卓越双语教育理想。
Last weekend, Ms. Richardson, Master of Wellington College Hangzhou and I went to Shanghai to hold the first job fair this year to recruit excellent teachers for the 2023/2024 academic year. Pupil development is at the core of school development, and excellent teachers guarantee quality school education. With this in mind, the school has and will continue to hold several online and offline recruitment sessions with various themes to introduce Wellington College Hangzhou. We aim to attract the best teachers and managerial talents to join our community and forge ahead in our journey to build excellent bilingual education.
近期，小学部开启了“百万分钟”英语阅读挑战计划，旨在帮助学生提升英语阅读兴趣，培养英语阅读习惯。学生可通过借阅学校图书馆书籍或通过Razkids、AccelaReader等学校提供的电子阅读资源来参与。活动将一直持续至明年4月的文学周，届时，学生将与老师们一起庆祝他们的阅读旅程和所取得的进步。
Recently, Hiba Primary launched the "One Million Minutes" English Reading Challenge Program, which aims to raise their interest in reading English materials and cultivate their reading habits. Pupils can participate by borrowing books from the school library or electronic reading resources provided by Razkids and AccelaReader from the school. The activity will last until Literature Week in April next year when pupils and teachers celebrate their reading journey and progress.

Sixth Form Matters
本周，高中部重点关注的话题是团队协作。我们向学生重申了"整体大于部分"的概念，引发同学们开展“团队协作强于孤立行事”的讨论。同学们认为，团队协作更有效，更能充分发挥团队中每个人的力量，可以激发良性竞争和创新。不论是在职场，还是在课堂，团队协作都十分重要。当每个学生都能尽其所能时，就能彼此激励、增进理解。为了培养高中部学生的协作能力，我们组织了一场名为“意面与棉花糖挑战”的学院比赛。比赛要求在10分钟内，用意大利面条、棉花糖和胶带制造能撑得起一辆玩具小汽车的建筑结构，建筑最高者获胜。最后，Combermere和Benson两个学院并列第一，Raglan学院因其组内协作表现突出而获得了特别的表扬。
Our focus this week was teamwork. Pupils were re-introduced to the notion that the 'whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Pupils explored this meaning and discussed the benefits of working as a team over working as individuals. Their suggestions included greater efficiency and being able to lean on everyone's strengths and how this can lead to healthy competition and innovation. Teamwork is equally important in the classroom and the workplace. By having every pupil participate to the best of their abilities, they can push each other to reach higher levels of understanding. The Sixth Form pupils were given a House competition to develop their teamwork skills: the spaghetti and marshmallow challenge. Each team had 10 minutes to create the tallest structure that could support the weight of a toy car using only spaghetti, marshmallows and sticky tape. Combermere and Benson won first place, and Raglan received a special commendation for their ability to work together.

Junior High Matters
本周，初二的学生重点思考的是如何为未来做出明智的选择。同学们思考了未来学习的方向和择业选择。在探讨选课的过程中，大家更加认识到努力学习的重要性及对未来的影响，学习目标更加明确。
This week our Grade 8s have been looking at making wise choices for their future. They have spent time thinking about what direction they would like to go for their future education and careers. Discussing pathways with pupils gives them the purpose to work hard and understand the importance of now and how it impacts their future.
下周，六年级家长们将首次参加初中部举办的小升初讲座。我们期待着小学部的家长能进一步了解初中部，与我们共同帮助学生做好准备，迅速适应下一段教育历程。
Next week, we welcome our Grade 6 families into Junior High for their first transition meeting. We always look forward to welcoming our Primary families into Junior High to ensure that pupils are prepared and settle quickly into their next education stage.

Upper Primary Matters
本周，小学部高年级的户外研学活动正式开始了，同学们都难掩激动之情。
This week was exciting for upper primary pupils as it saw the beginning of our class field trips.
教育研学活动不仅能拓展学生们的课外知识面，还能巩固学生的课堂所学。如荀子所说：“闻之不若见之，见之不若知之，知之不若行之。” 把课堂所学付诸于实践，能帮助学生更好地理解课堂内容。学校户外研学活动还能促进学生社交能力的发展，促进学生团队建设、增进同伴友谊。跨班级的户外研学活动还有助于学生在跨班互动中结交新的朋友。
Educational visits provide opportunities to reinforce lessons and expand knowledge. As Xunzi said: "I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand." 'Doing', or putting into action or practice lessons learnt in the classroom, helps pupils remember and understand them better. School trips also have a significant social aspect, facilitating team building and bonding between pupils. Often new friendships are developed during school trips as pupils from different classes interact and mix.
本周，三年级同学率先出发，参观了中国水利博物馆。作为科学课堂项目的拓展活动，本次活动重点探索了节约用水的重要意义和水资源的利用方式。同学们在博物馆员工的带领下，详细参观了博物馆，还积极参加了博物馆的各项群组活动。
This week's first visit was enjoyed by G3, who went to the National Water Museum of China. This trip made essential links to their science topic by highlighting the importance of water saving, how people deal with water and the importance of harnessing water. In addition, they toured the museum and completed a number of group activities with the museum staff.
今天，五年级孩子们在“森与海之城”度过了愉快的一天。上午，学生们开展了徒步活动，在大自然里探索植物，加深了对植物结构的理解，拓展了自身的科学知识。下午，学生们完成了一系列团队挑战活动，展示了良好的团队合作技巧和体育精神。
Today, G5 went to Say Hi park for another exciting day. The morning event saw an extension of our science curriculum for pupils to develop their understanding of plant structures while observing the natural environment during a hike. The afternoon allowed pupils to display teamwork skills and sportsmanship while completing several team challenges — an excellent way to end the week.
下周，四年级同学将同样前往“森与海之城”开启户外研学活动，六年级的学生会将中国文化主线课程课堂所学带到“良渚博物院”，开展一场生动的户外研学之旅。
Next week G4 will visit Say Hi park, and G6 will take a trip to Liangzhu Museum to support their Chinese cultural curriculum learning.

Lower Primary Matters
本周，我进入各班开展课堂观摩，了解具体的教学情况。我很喜欢通过这样的方式来了解各班当前的学习进展，与孩子们交流，了解学生的学习心得。
I have had the pleasure this week of observing the classes in Lower Primary and watching teachers teach, and children learn. This is always a great experience as a Head Teacher because it gives us a chance to view all the different kinds of learning and speak to the children and ask them what they think they are learning.
这一周里，我看到孩子们积极参与了一系列活动，例如用平板电脑做数学练习，用拼音做有趣的抽认卡游戏，开展英语指导下阅读，用“以读促写”的方法创建故事地图，开展能调动编辑技能和发散思维的项目式学习之“小小博物馆”活动，分组数学学习活动等。我很欣喜地看到学生们踊跃参与到不同科目的学习中，在面对不同的学习环境时也能应对自如，比如情绪高涨时也能很好地控制自己，知道什么时候该入座并静心听讲，能在课上自信地表达，能独立完成任务或与他人协作。
This week I have seen children engaged in a range of activities - from using pads to practise maths to playing enjoyable flashcard games using Pinyin, guided reading in English, story map creating using the talk4write method, project-based learning in which pupils were involved in editing and expanding on their ideas for a museum, maths using differentiated group activities, and much more. I was impressed by how engaged the children were in the different subjects and how they were able to operate in a learning environment which requires them to utilise various skills - such as being able to manage their behaviour when things are exciting, to know when to sit quietly and listen, to contribute confidently to the sessions, to work independently or in groups with others.
课堂观摩还为老师们提供了施展教学才能的机会。惠立非常重视教师的独特优势和才能。世界上没有两个一模一样的孩子，也没有两个一模一样的老师。我们需要综合地看到一名教师的整体，比如是否具备能支持他人、发挥优势、分享想法与教学实践、实现班内和校内团队协作的能力等。
It was also a chance for the teachers to showcase their skills. In a school like ours, we highly value the teacher's unique strengths and abilities, just as no two children are the same, nor are two teachers. School staff should always be seen as a sum of their parts - supporting others, leading in their strengths, sharing ideas and practice and working as a team (both in classrooms and across the school).
在未来一年里，我期待看到更多优秀的教学成果，也将为团队成员分享我的经验、优势和专业知识，不断学习新事物。
I look forward to seeing even more great learning over the coming year, lending my experience, strength and expertise to the team, and learning new things myself.

Library Matters
印度图书馆学家阮冈纳赞曾说：“每位读者有其书，每本书有其读者。” 我乐于关注当下最受学生欢迎的书，这能让我了解学生的阅读兴趣，为图书馆采购书籍提供参考，还能让我为苦于选书的学生提供建议。虽然孩子们喜欢的书不尽相同，但有共同兴趣的小伙伴往往能互相推荐彼此喜欢的读物。
As S.R. Ranganathan (a key thinker in library science) noted, to every reader of their book and every book its reader. I always enjoy looking at which books are currently popular with our pupils. Not only does it help me understand their interests and support purchasing decisions it also helps me give recommendations for pupils stuck on what to read next. While not every child will enjoy the same book, peer recommendations can be very successful when there are shared interests.

Performing Arts Matters
下周，本学期惠立表演艺术汇演将正式开启。部分表演人员的家长将应邀出席。期待着与学校社群分享同学们在音乐与戏剧课上的学习成果。
Next week, we will have our Performing Arts Recitals of the semester for our Hiba pupils. Parents of some of the performers have been invited, and we cannot wait to share with our school community what we have been up to during our music and drama lessons at school.

Our first Hiba Academy Hangzhou Piano Contest 2022 is upon us. We welcome pupils with passion, skills, and talent in piano.
这场钢琴演奏是发掘、激励和展示学校小钢琴家的重要平台。届时，我们将感受到同学们的音乐热情，鼓励大家展示钢琴才能。
We are looking forward to celebrating our pupils' passion for music and encouraging them to share their ability in piano performance. It is a substantial and effective means to discover, stimulate and promote young pianists at Hiba School Hangzhou.

Application for the contest is open, and you can start following the process now. Please check your email for guidance on how to participate in this event.
第一轮试演将以学生的演奏视频为参考。有兴趣参加的学生，请录制自己演奏自选钢琴曲目的视频，视频时长应为三分钟以内（可跳过部分节奏组或移动部分循环章节）。请于11月6日（周日）发送视频至performingarts.hsh@huilieducation.cn 。
The first round of auditions will be through video performance. Pupils interested in participating are requested to record themselves performing a piano piece of their choice. The performance should not be longer than 3 minutes (you may need to shorten the piece by missing out some sections or removing some repeats). Please send the video to performingarts.hsh@huilieducation.cn by Sunday, 6 November.

We are looking for performances with good expression, dynamics and phrasing. Furthermore, we are looking for confident performances that convey a good sense of style and meaning behind the music.
通过第一轮试演的学生将应邀参加第二轮面对面试演，最终我们选出将于11月17日（周四）上台表演的学生。
Those successful pupils will be invited for a face-to-face audition for the second round. Consequently, we will choose the finalist who will perform at an evening event on Thursday, 17 November.
