After meeting each other on the exciting first day of school, pupils start thinking about their goals and action plans for the new academic year with the help of teachers and parents.

During the summer, China has revealed a strategic policy to alleviate academic burdens for pupils to create an environment for comprehensive development where scores will no longer serve as the sole standard for selecting talents. It contributes to building socialism in the new era and a community of a shared future for mankind.

This week we launched our guest speaker series called "An Audience with….". We will be inviting university students and Wellington College Alumni to speak to our pupils and parents about their experiences at Sixth Form, university and beyond. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to hear firsthand about others' recent experiences and pick up tips for success over the next few years.

To commence our programme, Jessie Yao, a Computer Science student at the University of California Irvine, shared her educational journey with our Grade 10 and Pre A Level pupils. She spoke about how studying for her A Levels (Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science) was good preparation for her university studies, her recent internship at Microsoft and what life is like at university in the USA. Our pupils were inspired by her story, especially so as she is a woman in a male dominated field. We would like to thank Jessie for sharing her experiences and wish her all the very best with her career.

The start of the academic year is always a highlight for any school, as our pupils return, and the school comes alive once more. Our pupils have settled quickly into their new routines and have stepped up to the challenges that starting a new grade brings. We have welcomed our new Grade 7’s into Junior High with enthusiasm and high expectations and are confident that they too will be rewarded the success that our current Junior High pupils have been awarded with.

During the summer, I am proud to report that 8 of our Junior High pupils attended the final of the CCMUN competition and gained not only the 1st prize as a school, but also our Junior high pupils secured the first prize for individual performance, 2nd prize of individual performance, 3rd prize for individual performance and 1st prize for best paper. These results are a testament to the dedication and skill of our pupils in English speaking. We are incredibly proud of all our participants and the work that they have put in to ensure their success.

I am also honoured to report that two of our grade 9 pupils will be attending the World Scholar’s cup final at Yale University in America next year after winning the 2021 qualifying round in Shanghai this summer. We continue to look forward and celebrate all the successes of our pupils and Miss. McCann, the Assistant Head of Junior High is working closely with our Heads of department to ensure that we have many competitions available in an array of subjects across Junior High this year.

As we look forward to the coming week, we are focusing on the academic provision in all subjects, to ensure that our pupils are settled back into school life, as well as building relationships with their new teachers and tutors. Please can I remind all our day parents, that we do have a homework club available to all G7 – 10 pupils from 4:00pm – 5:00pm, as well as many events to welcome you to the new school year. I have had the pleasure of working with The Vicente Ferrer Foundation (Fundación Vicente Ferrer - Transforma la sociedad en humanidad (fundacionvicenteferrer.org) for many years now and have witnessed first-hand the life changing work they do every day. This charity works with people in one of the poorest, rural areas of India. They raise money to provide the resources and infrastructure for local people to live sustainable, purposeful lives. They support local people in several different ways, including running education programs, building hospitals, supporting disabled people, opening orphanages and providing land for farming.
之前，我启动了学校的教职员工每周蛋糕义卖活动。每周五提供新鲜烘焙的蛋糕，供教职员工大快朵颐，并为该慈善基金会募款。在此，我无比自豪地宣布，在教职工团队的大力支持下，此项义卖活动在八周内募得2700元人民币。这笔款项将同其他募捐活动的款项一起，助力该慈善基金会购得一台每分钟可制造500升氧气的制氧机，让每一位患者得到相应的治疗。每天，我校教职员工团队的大爱都在拯救生命。真可谓是大爱无疆！
In school I started running a weekly cake sale for our staff team. Every Friday I would arrange for freshly baked cakes to be available, so staff could come along, enjoy a tasty treat and make a donation to the charity. I am incredibly proud to say that our staff team were very supportive of this fundraising, and over an 8-week period we raised 2700 RMB. This money, along with other fundraising, meant the charity was able to purchase their own oxygen generator, which generates up to 500 litres of oxygen per minute, so every patient can receive the treatment they need. The kindness shown by our staff team is saving lives every day.

We are seeking to recruit representative from G1-G2, G3-G4, G5-G6, Junior High and Ming House respectively. The deadline for application is 17 September.

Hiba Academy Hangzhou has a mandatory uniform policy. Our school uniform promotes a sense of pride in our school and solidarity between pupils. This week the focus has been on sporting trials. All pupils from grades 3-10 have been invited to trial for one or more of our competitive sporting teams. Sports have included football, basketball, touch rugby, netball, volleyball and swimming. The aim of the sports department is to ensure that our most talented pupils are representing the school team, to continue our successful sporting achievements. Those pupils that are selected will join team practices during school activities (SAs) from the week commencing 13 September.

This year, we are looking forward to offering our pupils the best experience in music, dance and drama.
通过学校的辅助课程教学活动（CCA），我们将继续开展合唱团、乐队和管弦乐队等活动,并启动舞蹈项目、拉丁舞、嘻哈舞团和KPOP舞蹈等新活动。本周，150多名学生参加了舞蹈项目、摇滚流行乐队、室内乐和管弦乐团的试演。惠立学子的才华与天赋着实让我们眼前一亮。他们对音乐和舞蹈的热爱是那样的真挚而热烈。
Through our CCA programme, we continue to offer choir, bands and orchestra activities. Furthermore, we have new groups like dance projects, Latin dance, Hip-Hop and KPOP dance. This week, we had the opportunity to listen to over 150 pupils auditioning for Dance Project, Rock/Pop Bands, Chamber Group and Orchestra. We were astonished by the skills and talents of our Hiba pupils.
