As the new academic year begins, the IGCSE and the A Level examination results for 2024 have been announced. Pupils from Wellington College Hangzhou have continued their outstanding performance from previous years, marching into their new academic journey with excellent results.
The exam season this year has set a historical record in scale, with over 630,000 candidates from more than 5,200 schools in 140 countries participating worldwide, an increase of 9% from the previous year. In countries in East Asia, including China, Japan, Mongolia and South Korea, the number of participants reached a record high of over 70,000, an increase of 16%.
At the end of this scorching August, let us look at the remarkable achievements of our pupils.
Our A Level results have surpassed the local level in the UK
Wellington College Hangzhou pupils achieved an A*/A rate of 55% in their A Level exams, significantly higher than the 27% of the UK's local level. Several pupils even achieved 100% A’s in their respective subjects. All pupils who sat the A Level exams are the first graduating cohort of Wellington College Hangzhou, who are ready to embark on a new journey in September as they enter universities around the world for further study. These excellent results have brought a successful conclusion to their Sixth Form life.
A Level exam-takers continued the success of WCCH in IGCSE exams in several highly competitive subjects including economics, biology, mathematics, and chemistry, where they achieved a 100% A*/A rate for economics and biology, and a 100% A*/B rate for chemistry, mathematics, and further mathematics. They have also achieved commendable results in physics and art.
Notably, Wellington College Hangzhou achieved an impressive A* rate of 33% for economics and 25% for mathematics, while the percentages for both subjects globally were 7.6% and 16.7% respectively, confirming once again our leading position in the teaching of these two subjects.
Continuing the IGCSE success by achieving 236 A*/A
Despite facing increasingly stringent global grading standards and a significant increase in the number of candidates sitting IGCSE, our WCCH pupils have stood out with outstanding achievements from the top schools worldwide. 62% of the grades they received were A*/A, significantly higher than the UK schools' average of 21.7% for A*/A grades. Three of our pupils achieved 10 A*/A grades each, and eight achieved 9 A*/A grades each, demonstrating the strength of IGCSE education at Wellington College Hangzhou.
In a globalised world, our pupils have achieved excellence in both Chinese as a foreign language and global perspectives, securing a perfect 100% A*/A rating. In physics and chemistry, pupils achieved 95% A*/A grades, underscoring their academic prowess. In English as an additional language, pupils received 85% A*/A grades, showcasing their exceptional language skills.
With a solid foundation of knowledge and excellent application skills, our pupils achieved 85% A*/A in highly challenging subject of additional mathematics, a testament to their substantial academic strength and problem-solving abilities.
