众所周知,明年九月中旬,第19届亚运会将在杭州举行,届时杭州将迎来亚洲各国的运动员及随行人员等。我们非常期待这一盛事的到来,同时也希望我们的学生、家长和员工们在此之前都能做好相关的准备,为自己和他人构建好防疫屏障。上周学校在接收到教育主管部门的相关通知和要求后,已经跟家长们进行了沟通,希望家长们在充分了解新冠疫苗的有效性、安全性的基础上,能够尽快带孩子进行疫苗接种。因为接种疫苗、保持社交距离、佩戴口罩是世界卫生组织以及中国防疫专家们一致认为目前抗击疫情最为有效的方式。

Last week, after receiving the notice from Education Bureau, we communicated with parents regarding the efficacy and safety of the vaccine. We encouraged parents to take pupils to be vaccinated as early as possible. Being fully vaccinated, maintaining social distance and wearing masks are the most effective practices to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic acknowledged by the World Health Organization and Chinese anti-epidemic medical experts.


作为个体,我们常常倾向于认为自己能够对我们所处的世界做的贡献很微小。事实也许确实如此,但是聚少成多,积水成渊,我们每个人都可以做些自己力所能及的事情。在惠立,我们尊重个体的选择,但同时也鼓励大家都能勇于承担惠立社群乃至社会责任。

As individuals, we often tend to think that we can make little contribution to the world. It might be true. However, many a little makes a mickle. Each one of us can make a difference. In Huili School, we respect individual choices, but at the same time, we also encourage everyone to take responsibility for the Huili community and even society.


我们身处于一个日新月异的时代,因为新冠疫情而变得更加充满变数。生活在这样一个时代的每个人可能都在思考,我们如何应对这些变化,如何让生命更有意义。奥地利心理学家维克多·弗兰克尔在其《生命的意义》一书中为我们展示了追寻生命的意义的三种方式:做有意义的事情,热爱学习和所从事的工作;爱,尤其是关爱他人;拥有克服困难的勇气。 作为家长,我们应该跟孩子沟通这个世界正在发生的一切,并给予他们爱和安全感;作为教育工作者,我们应该引导学生学习、了解世界以及人类所面临的共同的问题,通过他们不断的学习和实践,未来有志于承担解决世界性问题的责任。弗兰克尔经历坎坷,传奇一生,他的思想如黑暗中的明灯,让我们感受到生命的力量,在困难与挫折面前给予我们前行的勇气。

We are in an era of rapid change where COVID-19 has brought more uncertainties. Everyone living in such an era may be thinking about how to deal with these changes and make life more meaningful. The book Man’s Search for Meaning, written by Viktor Frankl, an Austrian neurologist, clarifies three ways to pursue the meaning of life: to do meaningful things, love to learn and work, to love, especially caring for others; to have the courage to overcome difficulties. As parents, we should communicate with our children what is happening and give them love and security. As educators, we should guide our pupils to learn and understand the world and the problems faced by mankind and prepare them to solve world problems in the future by continuous learning and practice. Through his legendary life, Frankel experienced ups and downs. Yet, like a lantern in the dark, he makes us feel the power of life and gives us the courage to move forward.

大学招生办如何选拔学生?- 第二部分

How do admissions officers select students for their universities? - Part Two


上周,我们分享了申请大学时学业成绩的重要性。本周,我将讲述用超级课程活动和课外辅助活动来充实学生个人档案的方法。每年,大学招生官都将审阅成千上万份申请书。以下表格显示了各大高校的每年申请人数。

Last week I shared just how important academic performance is when making applications to universities. This week I will be covering how extra and super curricular activities can strengthen a pupil’s portfolio. University admissions officers read tens of thousands of applications each year. This is a table showing the institution and the approximate number of applicants each year.

虽然上表中申请剑桥和牛津大学的人数较少,但并不意味着更容易申请到这两所大学就读。其实,这一数据反映的是学生在申请这两所大学时更为审慎、理性。

It is worth noting that because Oxbridge receives fewer applications, this does not mean that they are easier to gain admission. Instead, it means that pupils are applying to these universities carefully and realistically.


《高等教育纪事》中曾有一篇文章表明,招生官每小时最多可以阅读15份入学申请。这意味着每位申请者为面试官留下积极的印象的时间只有四分钟。通常情况下,申请人都会深入研究具体专业的入学要求,所以申请人的成绩水平大多相差无几(具体分析请参考上周快讯文章);这时,超级课程活动和课外辅助活动就能更好地展示初学生的独特才能和个性。

According to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, admissions officers can read up to 15 applications per hour. This means that each applicant has just 4 minutes to make a positive impression. Furthermore, if thorough research is completed regarding a course’s entry requirements, in that case, it means that everyone applying for the same course will have by and large the same predicted grades (see last week’s The Week Ahead for an explanation). Therefore the super and extra curricular activities are beneficial for pupils to show more of their talents and personality.

Every institution wants its places filled with students who love learning and are determined to pursue their academic passions actively. Super curricular activities are ways in which a pupil can continue their education outside of the classroom. This may take any of the following forms:

参与超级课程活动可以展现出学生对所学学科的热忱,表明学生并非在漫无目的地申请大学专业。如果孩子对某一学术领域颇感兴趣、希望能够深入研究,请让学生与学校的升学指导老师联系。

By undertaking any super curricular activities, pupils demonstrate that they are serious about their love of the subject and not just aimlessly applying for a course at university. If your child has an academic interest that they would like to develop further, please ask them to speak to one of our university advisers.


什么是课外辅助活动?

What are extra curricular activities?

       

超级课程活动能够帮助学生展示学术热情,而课外辅助活动能为招生官描绘出申请人的个人特质。比如,身为游泳队队长或学生会主席的经历反映出的是领导才能,多年学习钢琴或芭蕾舞的经历说明的是持之以恒的态度。对申请者而言,没有课外活动最优组合一说,最好的选择是让学生遵循自身兴趣。

Where super curricular activities help pupils showcase their love of learning, extracurricular activities can provide admissions officers with a picture of each applicant’s personal attributes. For example, being captain of the swimming team or Head Girl/Boy demonstrates leadership qualities and learning piano or ballet for many years shows dedication. There is no magic combination of extra curricular activities for applicants; the best method is for pupils to follow their interests.

       

综上所述,大学招生官在筛选学生时,会综合考虑申请人的学业表现、超级课程活动和课外辅助活动、个人陈述与论文和推荐信。一旦学生满足入学学业要求,便会优先考虑有求知欲和内驱力的学生;而这也正是惠立和惠灵顿特质的意义所在——我们的学生不仅有能力成功申请上大学,还将继续在各大高校茁壮成长。

In conclusion to the title of this article, university admissions officers will consider academic performance, super and extra curricular activities, personal statements/essays and references. Once the academic entry requirements have been met, they will seek students who are hungry to learn and possess an independent drive to be inspired intellectuals. These are the identities of a Huili/Wellingtonian is no coincidence; we prepare our students to not just apply to university successfully but to thrive once they are there.

随着学生的成长,我们开始赋予学生更多独立思考的机会,开展学习方向的选择。我们要让学生全面审慎地决定,给予学生做决定的机会做出决定,明白决定必然产生令人或喜或忧的结果。这有利于学生不断提升决策技能。

As our pupils grow and develop, we start to entrust them with more independence in their choices and direction of study. We must prepare our pupils thoroughly to make these informed decisions. They are given the opportunities to make decisions and experience that every decision we make is coined with a consequence, some desirable, whilst others are less so. It is these experiences that cause us to learn and adapt our decision-making skills.


自然,这种决策能力的提高离不开我们给予学生的丰富信息。前期的信息收集是协助学生做出最明智决定的组成。比起预想的目标或个人优势,青少年的决定常为同龄人或环境所左右。这时,我们的幸福关怀体系、师生交流、八年级选课讲座等讲座便显现出在教育体系中的重要性。我们要鼓励学生花时间考虑自己的选修课程和影响选修课决定的因素。当家长和学校共同努力朝着这一目标迈进时,同学们的决定和思维便会更加有效、更加坚定。

However, a vital element to this growth is the information that we give pupils to ensure that their decisions are based on information that they have. It is common for younger people to base their decisions around their peers or environment rather than anticipating outcomes or considering their individual strengths. This is why our wellbeing programme, our teachers’ relationships with our pupils as individuals, and our talks, such as the Grade 8 options talk, are vital parts of an education system. We need to encourage our pupils to take the time to consider their options and the factors that are influencing their decision making. With parents and school both working on this goal, the decisions and thought processes that our pupils have and make will become stronger and more effective.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some activities are subject to changes. We will keep very close contact with the Education Bureau and will make sure to keep you updated. More information regarding the arrangements for junior high events will be sent by the school office soon.

惠立学校始终关注惠立学子的全面发展,包括高尚品德、友善待人、学术发展、领导力、潜能与影响他人的榜样力量。学校同时致力于培养学生拥有以后为国家和社区做出积极贡献的能力和品格,有意识地去培养未来的领导者。虽然不是每一个人都想成为领导者, 也不是每一个人都必须为领导者,但我们都需要领导技能。 我们希望每一位惠立学子都意识到,即使没有担任正式的领导职衔,他们同样可以成为领导者,带领同伴一起实现共同的目标。领导力并不局限于一个职位,而是一种寻求对周围的人和事物产生正向影响的自我突破。

Huili School always attaches high importance to pupils’ overall development apart from academic excellence, including good virtue, kindness, leadership, progress potential and role modeling power. The school is also committed to developing pupils’ ability and virtue in making positive contributions to the country and the community in the future, consciously fostering future leaders. Although not everyone aims to be a leader, not everyone has to be a leader; everyone needs leadership skills. We hope that every Huili pupil will realize that even if they do not hold a formal leadership title, they can still become leaders and lead their peers to achieve common goals together. Leadership is not just about one position but a self-breakthrough that seeks to impact the people and things around them positively.

从开学至今,我们为小学部高段的学生创造了诸多发展领导力的机会,包括值日班长、学部班级代表、餐厅协调员、操场纪律协调员等。每一次锻炼领导力的机会都将有助于提升他们的责任意识。在发展学生领导力的过程中,我们期待小领导者们能践行惠立价值观中的尊重和善良。尊重同伴, 学会倾听他人不同的声音,有同理心,能为他人的利益着想;同时能带着最大的善意,互帮互助,服务惠立社群。

Since the beginning of this term, we have created many opportunities to develop pupils’ leadership skills in upper primary, modelling duty leads, class representatives, canteen coordinators and playground discipline coordinators. Every leadership opportunity will help raise their sense of responsibility. In developing pupils’ leadership, we expect that young leaders can practice the Huili values: respect and kindness. We expect that they can respect their peers, be empathetic, learn to listen to different voices, and consider others’ interests. We hope that they can help each other and serve the Huili community with their utmost kindness.

       

在接下来的学部工作计划里,我们将提供更多的机会来培养和发展学生领导力,也将提供必要的培训引导小领导者们更加胜任他们的岗位。我们鼓励还未申请或较少申请领导岗位的学生可以从简单的岗位开始尝试,以获取一定的经验和自信力来突破自我。

In the future school plans, we will provide more opportunities to develop pupil leadership. The necessary training will also guide the young leaders to be more competent in their positions. We encourage pupils who have not yet applied for leadership positions or who have rarely applied for leadership positions to start from easy positions to gain some experience, build confidence and challenge themselves.

A strong school and community partnership is an essential part of our identity and everyday life, providing us with continued support, guidance, and resources to meet the needs of every single pupil in our care. This week we have been reminded how important these relationships are and how much value, support and knowledge our families and wider community bring to enrich the educational opportunities we provide daily.


受近期新冠疫情的影响,学校的疫情管控措施更加严格。请家长们放心,我们会全力确保学生、员工和家长的安全与健康。杭州市萧山区惠立学校的健康安全管理政策非常完善,将持续有力保障学校教学活动的正常进行。

As we are moving through a period of heightened measures in the continued fight against the recent rise in cases, I wish to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our pupils, staff, and families. The Huili School Hangzhou health and safety policies are as robust as possible and will allow school life to continue as it has been for our pupils.

Pastoral care is central to the vision and ethos of Huili School Hangzhou; it affects and influences every aspect of the educational journey a pupil experiences whilst at the school. It might be helpful for the community to know that there is additional support available within our school for any of our pupils and their family that might be struggling or needing to connect with wellbeing activities.

Chinese New Year Gala auditions will commence soon.


2022年1月20日(周四)和21日(周五),我们将用音乐会的形式庆祝中国文化中最为重要的节日——春节。这是惠立社群成员展示自己在音乐、舞蹈和戏剧中的精湛技能和才华的大好机会。

We are celebrating the most important festival in Chinese culture with a series of concerts on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 January 2022. We offer the opportunity to showcase and share the highest skills and talents in music, dance, and drama within the school community.

Please refer to the letter sent by the Performing Arts team explaining the audition process.


表演艺术的呈现离不开时间的沉淀。学生要认识到,要达到高技术水平离不开长时间的勤奋练习。因此,也请家长鼓励孩子,如果没有入选某项具体的演出,也不要灰心,学年内还有许许多多其他的表演机会。

Please note that performing arts is a discipline that takes time to develop. We encourage our pupils to understand that it takes time and effort to obtain a high skill level. Therefore, please help us by teaching the children not to be disheartened if they are not selected for this particular event. There are other opportunities throughout the academic year to perform.
