Message from the Principal
本周的关键词是——树立正确物质观。我们有时会发现学生在校内穿着价格不菲的服饰，我们也会收到家长们的反馈，学生经常希望拥有最新的科技产品。这种现象在成年人中也很常见。从心理学角度来解读这样的行为，不难发现每个人都希望树立一个理想形象，比如一个英雄，一个自信的人、一个在某个领域成功的人等等。而通常要想成为自己心目中理想形象则需要付出巨大的努力和长期的坚持。于是很多人会倾向于选择一条相对容易的捷径，通过拥有价格不菲的物品来实现被认可甚至被羡慕的感觉。然而这种希望用外在的物质来提升自己在他人心目中形象的行为，很多时候反映的是缺乏自信。自信的人并不需要依靠这些外在的所谓名牌来凸显，因为真正的自信来自于我们对自己现状的清醒觉知，并持续不断地进行自我反思与成长。
The keyword of this week is to establish a correct concept of wealth. We sometimes find that students wear expensive clothes on campus. We also receive feedback from parents. Students often want to have the latest technological products. This phenomenon is also common among adults. From the perspective of psychology, it is not difficult to find that everyone wants to establish an ideal image, such as a hero, a confident person, a successful person in a specific field. Usually, if you're going to become the ideal image in your mind, you need to make great efforts and long-term persistence. Therefore, many people tend to choose a relatively easy shortcut to realise the feeling of being recognised or even envied by owning valuable clothes or items. However, this kind of behaviour that hopes to use external materials to improve their image in the eyes of others often reflects a lack of self-confidence. Confident people do not need to rely on these external so-called famous brands to stand out because true confidence comes from a sober awareness of our current situation and a continuous process of self-reflection and growth.

We need to talk about this topic because we hope to help students establish a correct concept of wealth in their growth. Huili School cultivates our students to uphold the identity of "Courage, Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Responsibility", and to demonstrate academic excellence, innovation, pragmatism and all-round development through sustained efforts; a future with a sense of patriotism and responsibility, the courage to follow their dreams and the ability to live a happy life, and ultimately to approach their ideal image step by step.
本周，惠立初中部学生在英国中级数学思维挑战赛中收获14金，11银和9铜的好成绩，获奖率达91.9%，祝贺他们！我们庆祝学生所取得的成就，是称誉学生们在准备比赛的过程中所展现出的求知欲、不畏挑战、团队协作以及为实现目标而努力付出。我们也相信这些能力的养成是参与比赛对于学生而言意义最为深远的部分。
Congratulations to our Junior High School students who collected 14 golds, 11 silvers and nine bronzes in the UKMT-IMC this week, with a winning rate of 91.9%. Congratulations. We celebrate the achievements of our students because of their thirst for knowledge, defiance of challenges， teamwork and dedication to achieving the goals that they have shown in their preparation for the competition. We also believe that cultivating these excellent characters and skills is the most meaningful part of participating in the competition for our students.

Sixth Form Matters
上周，惠灵顿杭州校区与英国数千所学校一样开展了职业周活动。职业周旨在培养学生对职业发展的认识，拓宽学生对未来可以从事工作的视野。
Last week, along with thousands of schools in the UK, we celebrated Careers Week at Wellington College Hangzhou. The aim of the week is to develop pupils' awareness of career development and broaden their horizons about the jobs they could do in the future.
中学生针对就业市场上的变化展开了讨论，并对自己大学毕业后的就业市场做出猜想。活动中另一项非常有趣的任务是让学生猜测自己老师都从事过哪些职业。中学教师在上课时也以与各自学科相关的职业机会为核心播放视频、布置任务，引起学生对各学科可转移技能的积极讨论，也让学生了解到像专利律师到气候科学家等许许多多闻所未闻的职业。
Secondary pupils took part in discussions about changes in the job market and predicted which jobs might be in demand when they leave university. As part of this activity, they had great fun guessing some of the jobs their teachers used to do. Secondary teachers also began their lessons with videos and tasks centred on career opportunities related to their subject. It stimulated lots of interesting conversations about the transferable skills they gained from each of their subjects. Also, it opened their eyes to a whole host of careers they didn't realise existed, from patent attorneys to climate scientists.

Junior High Matters
科学周是初中部每年学校学习生活的一大亮点。学生们参与了多项创新挑战，如为宇宙飞船制作隔热罩、建造抗震塔、设计能将鸡蛋安全运送到上海的包装。孩子们将成为未来的科学家，继续推进医学进步、维护世界生物多样性、促进技术革新、深化我们对世界的理解，所以激励孩子们对科学的兴趣至关重要。初中部共有七间设备齐全的专业科学实验室。七位科学老师对各自专业充满热情，希望老师们的专业与热情能激发学生的学习热情，进而取得优异的学术成就。
Science week is a highlight of the Junior High calendar every year. The pupils have taken part in innovation challenges, including making a heat shield for a spaceship, constructing towers to withstand earthquakes, and designing packaging to send an egg to Shanghai safely. Inspiring the world's future scientists is vital to ensure that we continue with medical advances and secure the world's biodiversity, technology advancement, and understanding of the world around us. We are so fortunate to have seven fully fitted specialist science labs in Junior High, with seven specialist science teachers that can enthuse a passion for their subject and ensure that our pupils achieve outstanding results.

Each grade has organised various activities around the topic. In every science week, pupils are always fully engaged and immersed. The science week offers pupils an excellent opportunity to go beyond what they have learned and plant a seed of love for science in their hearts. Our pupils have demonstrated extraordinary scientific abilities, making us very confident, and we look forward to their future achievements and contributions to our society.

Lower Primary Matters
勇气是惠立价值观之一，是学生们日常行为生活的一部分，是课堂教学不可分割的重要一环，也是一年级学生本周的学习主题。勇气于成年人，是应对恐惧、痛苦、危险、不确定性或恐吓的能力，在追求善良的过程中承担可预估的风险。在满是孩子的课堂上，勇气是一个沉甸甸的概念；随着孩子们年龄的增长，勇气的重要性也将日益凸显。
Courage, one of the Huili values, is a daily practice, especially in the classroom it is also the value of the week for our Grade 1s. Courage, to us, is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. To take calculated risks in the pursuit of goodness. That can seem like a heavy notion for a classroom full of children, but it’s incredibly relevant as our children grow into young adults.
在课堂上引导学生学习勇气，不仅可以提高学生的课堂参与度和学业表现，还可以帮助孩子们学会应对逆境。在每天尝试新鲜事物，开展探险活动或者处理人际关系的过程中，孩子们会以多种方式应对逆境。通过传达勇敢的意义和事例，我们希望激发学生的勇气。于是，同学们和老师一起讨论了故事书中表现出勇气的人物，大家用提问等方式全面了解了勇气的概念。
Teaching children to have courage in the classroom not only increases levels of involvement and academic achievement, but it also helps children to learn how to respond to adversity. Children respond to adversity in many ways throughout the day as they try new things, take risk and navigate through their relationships! Our goal is to inspire courage in the classroom by teaching children what it means to be courageous and what it looks like in real-life situations. To inspire our children to be courageous, we explore and discuss characters in stories that show courage or have shown courage. We ask questions and listen to what we think courage looks like.

Sports Matters
上周五，惠灵顿杭州校区男子羽毛球队与杭州国际学校校队同场竞技。羽毛球是很受我校学生欢迎的一项运动，我们也很高兴能主场举办多场羽毛球竞技赛事。我校校队在整场比赛中占据优势，赢得了单、双打比赛的胜利。感谢监督赛事开展的王老师和Nolan老师。由于当前的疫情防控措施，竞技赛事无法如期进行，令师生感到遗憾。我们正在等待进一步通知。
Last Friday, the WCH boys badminton team competed against Hangzhou International School. Badminton is an extremely popular sport amongst our pupils, and it is great to see so many competitive fixtures take place at our school. The WCH team was dominant throughout, beating their counterparts in singles and doubles matches. Well done to Mr Wang and Mr Nolan for overseeing the competition. Unfortunately, due to current restrictions, competitive sports cannot take place. It is incredibly frustrating for pupils and staff. We await further guidance.

Performing Arts Matters

At Wellington College Hangzhou, we strongly believe in the power of drama, dance, and music. Therefore, please take a moment to read some findings related to listening to music and learning to play a musical instrument (singing included as the human voice is a musical instrument).
徜徉在音乐的怀抱中，我们心随乐动，随着乐音穿梭时空，从音乐中汲取力量，让音乐洗涤心灵。音乐能激发大脑的两个半球并搭建起更多联系。大脑右半球能刺激人的想象力，让人情绪高涨；大脑左半球能积极分析作品，聚焦思维的理性方面，如歌词、音符和节奏的意义。
Music surrounds us and inundates us; it makes us emotional, lets us travel in time, gives us strength or fills us in moments of peace. We can activate the brain's two hemispheres and create more connections between them through music. The right-hand part of our brain stimulates our imagination and lets our emotions fly high, while the left-hand part will be active analysing the works and concentrating on the more rational side, such as the meaning of the words, the notes, the rhythms.
当我们演奏乐器时，大脑中会发生什么？最近的研究表明，在主动学习乐器演奏的过程中，孩子的神经生理学特征会得到训练，大脑将学会听出乐器演奏独有的声音并给出解释，这是单纯听音乐教不会的（Locker 2014）。这对发展中的大脑很有意义，因为随着大脑的成熟，普通的神经元沟通过程将得到重塑，使得大脑更为精细地连接起左、右半球，进而强化处理复杂信息的能力。
What happens in our brain when we play an instrument? Recent studies show that neurophysiological distinction is trained when a child actively learns to play an instrument. Their brains learn to hear and interpret sounds unique to the experience of playing music that is not taught by just listening to it (Locker 2014). It is excellent for developing brains because as the brain matures, it rewires the ordinary course of neuronal communication to be more elaborate in connecting the left and right hemispheres. The result is a brain more capable of processing complex information.
